Get Out: The Annotated Screenplay

... but the pendulum has swung back again hasn’t it...? Black is “in fashion!”
— Get Out by Jordan Peele

I remember the first time that I watched Get Out, it was a fully body experience. Unlike most people that got to see it in theaters, I watched alone at home… that was a choice. The film’s intense images and deeper message sat with me for weeks. I felt this unusual mistrust for people around me, people that didn’t look like me. Like Chris said, “… being around too many white people makes me nervous” (pg. 108). The initial post horror film scaries wore off, but the greater impact stayed. It showed me that our black fear and horror could be approached in a creative way. Jordan Peele did that with Get Out. Having the opportunity to finally read the screenplay was really awesome. I sat in front of the TV and read while watching and it was nice to see what lines and shots from the screenplay differed. What was cut, kept, and maybe even improved. This book has shots from the film next to the script, so I was able to re-experience the visuals while reading which was helpful when I read on the train. All in all, it was great to re-experience this film from its foundation, the script. Not only as a fan but a screenwriter myself. It’s a masterful work and one of the best of this generation.
