ACE OF SPADES

When you grow up like this, whether it’s in your nature or not, sometimes survival overpowers doing the right thing.
— Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

The book was a roller coaster of an experience. So many unexpected twists and turns, and even when you thought you knew what was happening, you didn’t see the conclusion coming. This book follows a story that’s all too real for young black students. The fight to survive, “When you grow up like this, whether it’s in your nature or not, sometimes survival overpowers doing the right thing.” Ace of Spades is lead by two characters, Devon and Chiamaka, who become the targets of a secret assailant named Aces who exposes their deepest and darkest secrets. They’re both black and the only black students at Niveus, a private predominantly white school. This book takes the thriller genre and expertly infuses black horror and institutional racism into a surprising and unputdownable story. With a balance of humor, fear, and sorrow that I can attest to as a black student, I connected with it instantly. It’s refreshing to see authors like Faridah opening doors for black stories to be told in this genre.
